Summary | 0003651: A-10 targeting pod isn't helpfull
Description | While adding targeting pod is totally awesome, it has a limited to almost zero usability. There is no indication as to where the thingy is pointing, neither as azimuth, elevation nor compared to the plane itself (ie tank gunners can see turrets position relative to the hull). After opening the pod I have to move my mouse BLINDLY in every direction hoping to aim at some target, because I have no clue what am I seeing - it's just a grey screen until I randomly find some terrain features, but even then I cant really find my way around. I DON'T know how does it work in real life, so it's hard to make suggestions, gameplay-wise I might have some ideas but I think there is no point to waste my breath as you might be interested only in solutions based on RL.

Some improvements will be made, but right now it works almost completely like it does in real life. |

I think in real life pilots aren't blindly scrolling through their targeting pod - even though this system right now works "almost completely like it does in real life", it doesn't mean it's working close to good, as it is obvious that IRL this system is coupled with many others, that make targeting possible. It's my personal opinion, that design decisions should be revised, because making system "as is in real life" without making other systems that make it functionable IRL is a small mistake in planning. Either system should work on it's own (even when this means that it will not be as precise in recreating real-life features), or other systems should be created too - I think first option is more feasable :D It was years since I used mantis last time, so I THINK this comment should not reopen the ticket - if it does, please don't kill me ;) |

It's not a targeting pod in real life or in RHS A-10A. It's literally a screen relaying footage from a little camera in the front of the Maverick's missile's nose. A very basic system. Advanced targeting systems weren't developed until the A-10C. Which is not in the mod. |

"There is no indication as to where the thingy is pointing, neither as azimuth, elevation nor compared to the plane itself " There is indicator in HUD & there is pointing cross in camera itself - "On the TVM, the seeker’s position is in regards to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft, and is displayed as a pointing cross. When the pointing cross flashes, it indicates a valid lock. If the cross is lower and to the left of TVM center, then the missile seeker is directed down and to the left. The seeker’s gimbal limits are in width ±60 degrees. For launch however, it is necessary that the target be within ±30 degrees http://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/245570/manuals/A-10A%20Flight%20Manual%20EN.pdf?t=1466114653 [^] page 53 - HUD indicator page 54 - TVM manual |

No such thing as a A-10 Targeting Pod (TGP). They're different systems used across the entire fleet of NATO aircraft, that are mounted on the pylons instead of a weapon (UAVs excluded). SNIPER & LITENING Pods being the contemporary ones used by US Air Force. Older ones like ATFLIR being used by USMC. If I'm not mistaken the RHS A-10 only allows you to use the TV-guided AGM-65 nose-mounted camera, since the last time I tried it, it stopped working after I fired all my Mavericks. The camera itself does/should look bare. IRL you can basically only lock targets with it, that you're actually aiming towards, ie you're flying towards them. You can slave the Maverick to the TGP though and acquire the target more quickly that way. All of this is no use though, since we don't have TGPs in RHS as far as I know. Not trying to promote another mod here, but to better understand how a TGP works, there's TGPs in the USAF mod. Hopefully this rambling was helpful to someone at least. :) |
