this is true & not true at the same time. LRF is working till 5km BUTTTT you have also simple distance calculating based upon reading from altimeter & gyrocompass - might be not very accurate when there is difference in height between you & target but that method is successfully used in many russian aircrafts (Su-25 have LRF & gyrocompass distance reading, Mi-24 have only gyrocompass readings, etc). That for example is a reason why you get constantly updated distance reading while looking at through the optics which can be easily noticed on those few videos available over internet . I'm still not sure how to implement this gyrocompass method so as for now it's going to stay this way

So you are saying that if a helicopter (or its turret or whatever is measuring) is an apex of a right triangle, the adjacent side is the height above ground, the hypotenuse is the calculated distance and the angle between them is the value from the gyroscope ? And in mi-24 distance to target is simply calculated as = (height / (cos gyroangle)), is that how altimeter & gyrocompass method works ?
