Summary | 0003880: Mi-24 all models AI gunner has problems detecting enemies |
Description | In Singleplayer scenarios long range missile attacks are more or less impossible since the AI gunner is not able to detect even large targets like tanks from afar |
Steps To Reproduce | Disable automatic player contact reporting in ArmA options
Place Mi-24 with crew at flight altitude
Place enemy tank 2km away from Mi-24
Play as Mi-24 pilot
AI gunner will not detect the enemy tank even though it is visible with bare eyes from the pilot seat. |
Additional Information | When repeating the steps above but placing an Mi-48 Kajman instead the AI gunner will spot the enemy tank easily after a few seconds |

what kind of distances are you talking about? Mi-24 doesn't have any sensors so it's quite expected that it's blind on it's own |

2km with free line of sight. At the moment the AI does not detect them at all at this range although they are visible with bare eyes from the pilot seat.
If you get closer, like 1km hovering, it will detect enemy vehicles like tanks but it takes quite a while.
If you fly towards the enemy the AI gunner often detects the enemy too late, when they are right below you, firing at you.
Given that the gunner has magnifying optics he should be able to detect enemies early otherwise you can't eliminate anti-air guns from long distance with missiles.
The Kajman gunner seems to work alright with active radar turned off. |

Mi-48 has also IRST ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infra-red_search_and_track [^] ) which enhance target detection. Have you tried increasing AI skills? On my end AI is able to detect targets normally ~1.5km. Have you tried using Mi-24 scope? It's quite hard to do target acquisition in flying helicopter with such device. Mi-24 is not Anti Air suppression vehicle by any mean and you should be extremely careful when trying to deal with AA threats. |

Yes, with the increased AI skills the gunner picks up targets at about 1.5km
It just feels a bit odd when you can see the targets with bare eyes at 2km and want the AI to engage them but they just can't do it. I managed to work around it by swapping seats to the gunner position, identify the targets with the scope and swap back to pilot seat but it feels a bit like a cheap trick.
BTW in the Mi-24D & V version I cannot tell the AI gunner to aim at the next target (default key "R"). In the G version (Superhind) this is possible probably because of the sensor/radar. Is this behaviour intended? The only way to assign targets to the AI gunner in the D & V versions is via the command menu which works but is cumbersome especially in combat. |

"Is this behaviour intended? " yes, it is.
behaviour of mi24 seems ok for me so I'm closing this ticket for now as it seems a little bit exaggerated. AI is able to detect enemy vehicle for me from ~2km and from that distance enemy vehicle is kind of small dot on the horizon.
