Summary0004909: 3d scopes zoom inconsistency.
DescriptionIf you use 3d scopes like the SU230, or 1P29, when aiming down sights and holding the right mouse button, you will get some degree of "additional zoom" (AZ) further in the text.
This AZ is inconsistent in different scopes e.g:
- PSO-1M2 zoom 4x has no AZ (Just like all vanilla 4x scopes).
- An/PVQ-31A zoom 4x has quite considerable AZ (in default zoom reticle marks are unreadable).
- 1P29 has little AZ (reticle is huge and readable at any zoom).
- M145 MGO little AZ helps read the markings, but no other advantage.
- SU230 same as M145 MGO
- G33 magnifier zoom 3x has no AZ

So basically this AZ has no obvious benefit and it frustrates the finger that has to hold down Right Mouse Button.
Perhaps it is possible to remove this AZ all together, and look through 3d scopes at the level that allows for reticle marks to be readable ?

Well, AZ on ACOGs is there to simulate situational awerness you have with that open scope

1P29 is now using wrong eye memory point for 3d variant and normally it looks like this https://imgur.com/a/YvhAcpd [^]

G33 & PSO doesn't have AZ due to technical issues - either tunel vision would be too obvious or open mesh could be spotted.

RMB is used anyway to hold breath action so you have to use it anyway if you want to fire at target accurately. Personally I think removing that AZ would be bad idea since it's really breaking the feel of scope & RMB makes sense since it's sort of focus mode.

>RMB is used anyway to hold breath
No, that has been changed years ago:
https://dev.arma3.com/post/spotrep-00062 [^]
Tweaked: Hold Breath is now bound to Left Shift in the Arma 3 Apex preset (instead of the Right Mouse Button)

I believe it was changed because (And that is what I experience all the time), when you are in combat you have to do 3 things with your right hand:
1) move the hand to aim
2) Hold RMB to be zoomed in to see the reticle marks
3) click LMB to shoot

In my experience and that of other players I have asked, when you are in the middle of a shootout you often let go of RMB, or hold it down so hard that your finger gets tired and you eventually let go. Maybe it does not happen in the Arsenal, but in a tense firefight scenario it does happen very often.

On medium distances (350-500) RHS vests and headgear do not render at about 450-500 in zoomed out mode, so when suddenly zoomed out you loose your target because it changes shape, and sometimes color as uniform underneath might be different color to the vest.

As for awareness you still do see around the edges. Scope with removed AZ does not have to be at maximum zoom but somewhere in the middle just enough to see the marks. Difference between this and zoomed out is only about 1cm narrower FOV from each side. If you have trackIR you are not restricted in any way and can turn your head away from scope AZ or no AZ.

RHS vests like vanilla ones should be rendered in all lods. If there is issue with it then its something that could be fixed instead of changing zoom. What about people without track or? I'm also wondering if zoom toggle on numpad is not enough (+).

Anyway I could definitely tweak some of the initial zoom levels but I don't see complet removal of it.

Yes that is probably ok, so long as the reticle marks are readable straight from initial, because the view resets to initial in many cases after reload for example.
The (-) key on the numpad can be used for awareness. Like Vanilla ACO scope has some positive zoom from initial with the (+) key and some negative zoom with the (-) key, RHS 4x scopes do not have negative zoom (at least those I checked before typing this)

My 2 cents would be that the initial/additional zoom is as valid for 3D scopes as it is for ironsights. Of course it isn't zoom at all but rather simulates the human eye's full ability in a way that cannot be represented on a screen (detail perception *plus* a wide-FOV). Barring technical reasons I think the initial zoom should always be the same as the default FOV. If holding is a pain I believe there are key binds available to toggle instead and mods such as; https://forums.bohemia.net/forums/topic/211214-weaponsights-zoom/ [^]
